Breaking News: Costco and Target also fell after Walmart's profit forecast

Walmart's (NYSE: WMT) stock price fell after the business announced higher-than-expected earnings for the holiday quarter but issued cautious estimates for the next year.

Revenue climbed by 7.3% to 164.1 billion dollars during the fiscal year in question.

The firm said that its total comparable sales in the United States climbed by 8.3% in the second quarter, above both the consensus forecast of 6.2% growth and the guideline mark of +3.0%.

Comparable sales in the United States increased 13.9% over the same time two years ago.

The number of transactions climbed by 1.8% over the holiday quarter, while the average ticket price increased by 6.3%.

Sam's Club stores in the United States had a 12.2% gain in comparable sales, driven by a 6.7% increase in transactions and a 5.2% increase in average tickets.

Walmart International's total sales increased by 2.1% to $27.6 billion.

During the quarter, the Bentonville company grew its share of the US grocery market, but it also said that consumers are under a lot of stress.

Strong sales growth and lower COVID-related expenses were the main causes of the decline in the consolidated gross profit rate, but charges for reorganization and restructuring in the International division partially offset these factors.

After-adjusted operating income climbed by 6.9% to $6.4 billion.

CEO status report: "We are delighted with how things are progressing."

The team ended the year on a high note by producing a strong fourth quarter, and our results over the last two quarters show that they worked quickly and aggressively to resolve the inventory and cost issues we had the prior year.

We were able to develop momentum during the third quarter, and that trend is continuing.

This upcoming fiscal year is going to be a terrific one for us.

Walmart (WMT) has said that it expects consolidated net sales growth of 2.5% to 3.0% in constant currency in the future.

Comparable sales at Walmart in the United States are likely to increase by 2.0% to 2.50% (excluding fuel), while comparable sales at Sam's Club in the United States are expected to increase by about 5%. (ex-fuel).

Analysts think that EPS will dip somewhere between $5.90 and $6.05. This compares to the average forecast of $6.51.

Walmart (WMT) shares were trading at $140.88 when the market opened on Tuesday, a 3.89% decline.

Target's (TGT) and Costco's (COST) share prices fell by 1.25% and 2.10%, respectively.
